New Service Opportunities

Ready for a Beach (work) Trip?

The Service Ministry has committed to a week-long Hurricane Sandy repair project under the auspices of the Presbyterian Disaster Relief (PDR) program July 14-20. Eleven CHPC volunteers will be staying in housing provided by the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church on the New Jersey shore. The exact nature of the work is evolving and we will be informed soon. For the next two years, the Congregational Based Shelter Project will be based at Emory United Methodist Church during July and August. St. Marks is undergoing major renovations and therefore cannot host the two families. Before committing to St. Marks that we will provide 2 overnight volunteers on Monday evenings, 18 CHPC members or friends must commit to the project (two per night; 9 Mondays.) If we cannot find 18 volunteers, those interested can fill in as needed by St. Mark’s coordinator, Marlan Green. Emory United Methodist Church is located near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Missouri Avenue NW. Volunteers will need to provide their own transportation or travel by bus. This is where the families stay 10 months out of the year when they are not at St. Marks in the summer. Providing dinner this year will NOT be required, as families prepare their own meals in the kitchen there. Volunteers can eat beforehand or take a meal with them.

In May and June (dates to be determined) there will be opportunities for volunteers to see the facility and ask questions.  Please contact Sally Stoecker.  if you have additional questions!  Many thanks for giving this important ministry your prayerful consideration.

Ongoing Service Opportunities

EVERY SUNDAY all are encouraged to bring food items for the food pantry operated by Lutheran Church of the Reformation.  Items listed below should be placed in the collections bins the CHPC Fellowship Hall.

This is a basic bag of groceries designed to meet the needs of a family of four for two days. You may donate any or all of these items.The sizes indicated are selected because they fit easily into one bag. Although largersizes may be cheaper per ounce, we are unable to divide them among bags.  PLEASE, NO GLASS CONTAINERS. Cans, paper, and plastic containers only.  Business size cards to keep with you containing the list below are available on the CHPC Fellowship Hall welcome desk.

2 cans green vegetables (12-15 oz)
- green beans, peas
2 cans yellow vegetables (12-15 oz)
- corn, carrots, mixed vegetables,
white or sweet potatoes
2 cans fruit (14-16 oz)
- peaches, pears, applesauce, cherries,
plums, cranberries, fruit cocktail
1 can pork and beans (12-16 oz)
1 can tuna (6 oz)
1 jar peanut butter (16-18 oz)
2 boxes macaroni and cheese (7 1/4 oz)
2 packages dried soup/flavored noodles
- (3 oz)-Ramen noodles
1 box crackers (16 oz)
1 box dry cereal (12-16 oz)
2 1-qt packages dried milk

FIRST SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH – Soup Kitchen Sunday  - on the first Sunday of every month after worship we prepare large casseroles that serve people in our neighborhood Soup Kitchen located at the Church of the Brethren at 4th and NC SE.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH – Burrito Sunday  - on the third Sunday of every month after worship we prepare breakfast burritos to be served in our neighborhood breakfast program operated by Capitol Hill United Methodist Church on Seward Square.
